Tips to Eliminate Glowing of LED Lights When Off

People who are new to using LED lights often find themselves surprised by the faint glow that persists even after turning off the bulb. While this may not be harmful to the bulb or the overall lighting setup, it can be quite annoying and increase your energy consumption slightly. So, why do LED lights continue to emit light after being switched off? Should you be worried about it? And most importantly, what can you do to resolve this issue?

Why do LED bulbs emit light when turned off?

The primary reasons behind this phenomenon are as follows:

Presence of a neutral wire: If the electric circuit has a neutral wire that is not bonded with the earth, LED bulbs can pick up even the slightest electric supply and emit a dim glow.
Electromagnetic induction: Sometimes, electric pick-up along the cable wires can cause LED bulbs to light up slightly, even when switched off.

It is important to note that these factors do not cause any damage to the bulb itself. Although the bulb’s lifespan may be slightly reduced, LED bulbs already have an incredibly long lifespan. Additionally, the extra electricity consumed due to this issue is negligible.

However, if your LED strip lights emits a glow when turned off, it indicates an irregularity in the system that may require attention.

How can you prevent LED lights from glowing when off?

Fortunately, there are several simple ways to address this issue. Here are a few suggestions:

Replace the light bulb with a higher quality LED bulb: Although this solution does not address the underlying cause, it can quickly eliminate the annoyance. Ensure that you choose a trusted and high-quality brand when purchasing the new bulb.

Ground the wiring: To implement this method, you will need a Zener diode. This diode regulates the circuit’s voltage and prevents any excess charge when the system is turned off.
Install a neon indicator to absorb the extra charge: Neon indicators are readily available for purchase on platforms like Amazon. Connect the indicator between the neutral and lone bulb at the end of the string. This way, the indicator will glow instead of the bulb.

Contact the manufacturer if the light fixture is still under warranty: If your light fixture is experiencing this issue, it is most likely a fault in the fixture itself rather than the bulb. Reach out to the manufacturer for assistance. Alternatively, you can contact an electrician if the troubleshooting process sounds overwhelming.
By implementing these solutions, you can enjoy the benefits of LED lighting without any unwanted glowing when the lights are turned off.
